Custom ZnSe Lens for CO₂ Laser Applications

Zinc selenide (ZnSe) is a widely used optical material for CO₂ laser systems because of its excellent infrared transmission in the wavelength range around 10.6 μm. ZnSe lenses are commonly integrated into laser cutting, welding, engraving, marking, and other industrial laser systems where reliable infrared optical performance is required.

ZnSe Lenses for CO₂ Laser Optics

CO₂ laser systems operate primarily at a wavelength of 10.6 μm, making material selection particularly important for the optical path. ZnSe provides high transmission at this wavelength and can be manufactured into different optical components for beam focusing and delivery.

Depending on the optical design, ZnSe can be used for plano-convex lenses, meniscus lenses, windows, and other infrared optical components. A properly specified lens helps maintain the required beam quality and focusing performance during laser operation.

Custom Optical Components for Industrial Lasers

Industrial laser systems often require optical components with specific dimensions and optical specifications rather than standard catalog sizes. Custom ZnSe lenses can be produced according to drawings, dimensions, focal length, curvature, thickness, and tolerance requirements.

For OEM applications, the lens diameter, edge thickness, center thickness, focal length, clear aperture, and surface quality can all be considered according to the requirements of the optical system.

Infrared Optical Performance

ZnSe is particularly suitable for infrared optics because of its broad infrared transmission and compatibility with CO₂ laser wavelengths. Its optical properties make it useful in applications where conventional visible-light optical glass cannot provide the required transmission.

For demanding laser applications, additional specifications such as surface accuracy, coating performance, absorption, and laser damage resistance should also be considered. Anti-reflection coatings can be applied to improve transmission and reduce reflection losses at the operating wavelength.

ZnSe Lens Coatings

The coating is an important part of a CO₂ laser optical component. An appropriate infrared anti-reflection coating can improve transmission at 10.6 μm and reduce energy losses caused by surface reflection.

Coating selection depends on the operating wavelength, laser power, incidence conditions, and application environment. For high-power CO₂ laser systems, coating quality and laser damage resistance are especially important considerations.

Applications in CO₂ Laser Systems

Custom ZnSe lenses are used in various industrial laser applications, including laser cutting, laser welding, laser engraving, laser marking, and material processing.

They can also be incorporated into laser focusing assemblies and beam delivery systems where precise infrared optical components are required.

For OEM manufacturers and laser equipment integrators, custom optical components can be manufactured according to application-specific drawings and technical specifications.

Custom ZnSe Optical Components

Custom ZnSe lenses can be supplied in different diameters, focal lengths, geometries, and surface specifications to meet specific CO₂ laser optical requirements. Material selection, dimensional tolerances, surface quality, coating requirements, and inspection standards can be defined according to the application.

For a custom optical component, providing a drawing or detailed specification allows the required ZnSe lens configuration to be evaluated accurately before production.
