How to Specify Optical Coating Requirements for a Custom Lens

Optical coating requirements affect lens transmission, reflection, and overall system performance. When requesting a custom lens, providing the correct coating specifications helps avoid unnecessary costs and delays.

1. Specify the Operating Wavelength

State the wavelength or wavelength range in which the lens will operate. A coating designed for visible light may not perform well in the infrared. For laser applications, provide the exact laser wavelength.

2. Define the Required Coating Performance

Choose the coating based on the application:

  • Anti-reflective (AR) coating: Reduces surface reflection and improves transmission.
  • High-reflective (HR) coating: Maximizes reflection at specified wavelengths.
  • Partial-reflective coating: Provides a defined reflectance for beam splitting or laser cavity applications.

If possible, specify the required reflectance or transmittance rather than simply requesting an AR coating.

3. Provide the Angle of Incidence

Coating performance changes with the angle at which light strikes the lens. For most standard applications, near-normal incidence may be suitable. For angled or laser systems, specify the intended angle and polarization requirements (S or P).

4. Consider the Operating Environment

Temperature, humidity, laser power, and cleaning conditions can affect coating durability. For demanding applications, clarify the operating environment and any required damage threshold or durability standards.

5. Include Coating Details in Your RFQ

When requesting a quotation for a custom optical lens, provide:

  • Lens material and dimensions
  • Operating wavelength or wavelength range
  • Required reflectance or transmittance
  • Angle of incidence and polarization, if applicable
  • Environmental and durability requirements

A complete specification helps the supplier recommend a suitable coating and evaluate manufacturing feasibility before production.
